The coaching carousel officially came to a close last night
and there was one major shakeup that happened at the 11th hour…
The University of Arizona’s coach left for the greener pastures
of the ACC and Clemson University. This
is huge news for the Pac 10 as a whole but most importantly to us at ASU. Sim AI coaches don’t do nearly as good a job
recruiting as human coaches do so this potentially creates a window for
us. (Sim AI also aren’t limited by
proximity restrictions so they’re free to recruit from the nation-wide pool of
talent, and they tend to target players a bit lower than you’d expect an A+
prestige team to target) Granted they’ll still have the kids the previous coach
recruited for a couple years, and someone will likely step in within in next
year or so, but this recruiting cycle for sure we’ll be contending with one
less power player in our backyard contending for our prized recruits.
Bottom line, this is great news for us and horrible news for
the conference. The more top-tier teams we have in the conference the better
off we all are. So losing a marquee coach from a marquee team stings the group
as a whole a bit, but nothing we can’t recover from and hopefully by that I
mean that ASU takes their spot as the marquee team in the state of Arizona.
