Returning Player Profile
PF Hugh Meighan (SO)
Coming to campus as a somewhat unsung recruit can be a
daunting task for any 18 year old. Hugh
was only the 63rd ranked PF in his HS class and was jumping onto one
of the biggest stages in the college basketball world, a power 6 conference
team. It was a foregone conclusion that
he would take a redshirt his first year on campus and give his skills some time
to grow and become a solid contributor by the time his career was done.
As you can see Hugh has already seen a pretty impressive
growth from his humble beginnings as a sub-600 player to the mid-600s where he
now starts his SO campaign. He still has
lots of room for growth and could be a mid-700s player by the time he is all
said and done here at ASU. I’d expect to
see his defense max out this season and try to push his rebounding to the upper
limit as well (I’d expect 93-94 on that defense rating). Once those are near the top we’ll turn our
focus to making him more of a threat from the perimeter by working on his
outside shot, ball handling, and passing skills. Hugh may not have had the
class ranking of a big-time D1 player but he surely had the attributes and
potential of one.
Last season as a redshirt freshman Hugh saw about 12 minutes
of action per game in all 32 of ASU’s contests and his numbers weren’t too
bad. Hugh contributed 4.2 pts and 3.4
rebounds per game which is more than I can honestly say I expected from
him. That being said, more will be
expected of him this season as he has moved up a few rungs on the priority
ladder. Hugh may end up being a spot-starter and for sure key reserve for our
team going forward, even this season as a Sophomore. I’m sure when he got the news that he wasn’t
even a top 50 PF in his class, he never dreamed that he’d end up playing major
minutes at a power 6 school, but here he is. Just a testament to his hard work
and dedication.
