National Semifinal Game 1
6 seed Florida St vs 4 Seed North
Carolina
These two teams met right near
the end of the regular at North Carolina and the home team easily swept FSU to
the side in a 86-66 victory. The Tar
Heels were looking for a duplicate performance while the Seminoles from
Talahassee were determined to not let this game take the same form that the
first matchup took.
This game as much like UNC could
have hoped for as they were able to jump out to an early double digit lead,
16-6 over the game’s first 7:30 minutes.
However FSU wasn’t ready to stick a fork in the game quite yet as they
slowly crawled their way back on the back of reserve SG Charles Lamphear who
scored 9 points over the next 10 minutes as the Seminoles eventually took the
lead at 22-21 with 3:42 left in the half. Both teams would trade blows over
those final few minutes and would eventually head to the half all knotted up at
27-27.
The 2nd half got off
to the exact opposite start of the first. If UNC thought they were just going
to be able to push their way through the 2nd, they were badly
misinformed as FSU scored the first 5 field goals of the half and didn’t allow
UNC to get points from anywhere except the FT line until over 8 minutes into
the half. By that point FSU had built a
43-30 lead. UNC was never able to crawl
their way back from a double digit deficit like the Seminoles had in the first
as the lead would increase to 18 or fall to 8 but UNC was never able to really
get back in the game as they eventually fell by a final score of 62-50.
